Pa Deng/ Grandma Red. I heard a rattling of a nearby door being unlocked behind me which made me fumble to open up mine even more. Just as i got it opened I heard “weeelll, where did you come from?….” I turned around and saw Grandma Red smiling through the ferns which stood between our two porches. I knew deep down I was hurrying as one, I was still in my swimmers, dripping, and only a damp towel covering myself and two, I was wary and embarrassed that Meow might have for some reason been accompanying Grandma Red.
I smiled and moved around the fern to say hi. She asked where I had been and motioned for me to come closer so i did. I’m pretty sure I made sense to her as she responded appropriately. I asked her what she had been doing today and if she was currently watching tv- I could hear it playing in her room and felt comfortable enough saying “are you watching tv” in Lao. She told me she had been………………………… and that’s pretty much was how it felt like as I had no idea what those words she said meant. i guessed it had something to do with praying as she saw the blank nodding I responded with and went back into her room. She came back with what looked like rosary style beads and demonstrated a chanting that she did. She said:
Dont be jealous. Don’t say bad things. Don’t get caught up in the gossip. I am who I am, you are who you are and just be peacful. be calm. Be happy. there’s no need for jealousy, for bad talk. Just stay to yourself and it will be well. They can’t hurt you.
I used to give money to (some kind of people) but they would pocket it themselves. I now give it to (temple?temple group?) and they distribute the money where it’s needed. To those who can’t afford food, to children for clothing, and other things.
She then went back in and got her contract for the film and shared with me how much she recieved. She showed and read to me the letter that Kym and Sylvia sent to her with their previous film about Laos “Bomb Harvest” that had been translated into Thai.
Meet Pa Deng-(though ‘Pa’ means older auntie, she is known as Grandma Red)
Her real name is Bounsari . She is an established Thai actor originally from Laos, currently living in Bangkok.

When I woke up this morning and went to breakfast I saw Deng sitting by herself and decided to join. She told me she and Meow had dropped by and knocked on my door to see if I wanted to walk with them for breakfast…unfortunately for them I was still asleep and didn’t hear a thing. Halfway through though, Meow joined us. He had gone to a temple nearby for some type of New years blessing. He was still calling me Mali and I could tell he was trying to build up some kind of connection as a way of preparing for the role. He told me he went to the temple and then asked if I wanted to take a walk there. I wouldn’t have felt uncomfortable commiting to anything if he’d asked me and not “Mali” and generally just kept hinting that i was his wife…
WHITE WATER RAFTING!!!! Ana, her boyfriend Shunji and I had decided last night that we’d go whitewater rafting together this morning…and we did…
